Description

A Pilot’s View of WWII.  Description of combat and camaraderie described by a World War II bomber pilot. Author Winifred Tappan interviewed Robert Boecking, who flew B-17 Flying Fortresses in the 379th heavy Bomb Group, 8th Air Force stationed at Kimbolten Air Field, England. Her ‘Author’s Notes’ include historical references and comments. She also interviewed a woman who gives a first-person account of what it was like to be ‘on the ground’ when Boecking’s squadron was dropping bombs from above.

Illustrated.  Includes historic photographs, Mission Target Map, and 38 page-images from the pilot’s hand-written Mission Journal of training and 36 Missions flown over Germany, Czechoslovakia, and France in 1944.

Review:  “I found that journal entries gave great insight into the day-to-day lives of those who fought with the 8th Air force during the Second World War. I also thought the author’s notes do an exceptional job of clarifying and elaborating on Boecking’s story.”
